Chemical control includes the application of liquid insecticides to the bugs that gather outdoors and indoors. Outdoors, a 1-gallon garden sprayer or a hose connected sprayer may be used to treat the adults along the side of the house or around trees. These insects often return to the same location for several years, so repeated application may be necessary.
Box elder bugs do not feed on household materials, so there is no need for extensive chemical control indoors. They can be cleaned up with a vacuum cleaner. Put the vacuum cleaner bag in a sealed plastic bag. Eliminating hiding places such as piles of rocks, boards, leaves, and debris close to the building will help. Seal cracks around doors, windows, and in the foundation.
