How To Get Rid Of A Cockroach Infestation

Cockroaches are pests all across the United States and the world. When you discover an infestation in your home, do you know what to do? Effectively getting rid of roaches takes a comprehensive approach that may involve sanitation, exclusion, and chemical methods. Identify Problem Areas

First, identify problem areas in your home and get a general idea of the scale of the infestation. Do this by pulling out a flashlight and some glue traps. Use the flashlight to search in dark, hidden areas where roaches spend most of their time. Pay special attention to closets, bathrooms, kitchens, under sinks, behind the fridge, under appliances, on shelves, in pantries, and in basements. Place glue strips in these areas and wait for a few days. Once you see how many roaches you catch, you can hit the most populated areas first. These high traffic areas will also need the most treatment.

Clean Your Home

Roaches are attracted by crumbs, excess moisture, clutter, and other debris. Go through your home and do your best to clean and tidy up. Roaches leave pheromones that will attract other roaches. This is why your home may have a musty smell if you have a roach infestation. After you have identified major problem areas, give it a good scrubbing to eliminate the aggregating pheromones. Unfortunately, even clean homes can get roaches, so just continue with a daily cleaning routine, store your food properly, and fix any leaky pipes or faucets that may lead to excess moisture.

Seal Entry Points

A crucial step to keeping out cockroaches and many other pests is to properly seal the exterior of your home. Walk around your home looking for cracks, holes, and gaps. Areas where pipes and wires enter the home are typically problem areas. Use caulk to seal small entry points and expandable spray foam for larger areas. It is also important to check the weather stripping around windows and doors to ensure a tight seal.

Use Roach Tablets or Dusts

Once you have worked on sanitation and exclusion efforts, roach tablets and powders are a good way to help eliminate roaches. The tablets contain boric acid and have an added lure that will attract roaches. Place the tablets or powder in out of the way areas like under sinks, behind appliances, and in wall voids. If left undisturbed and away from moisture, tablets and powders can last for years and will continue to kill roaches.

Spray with Liquids or Aerosols

Another treatment that stops roaches in their tracks is using a liquid or aerosol insecticide. These sprays are safe to be used indoors. After it dries, the residual spray can continue to kill roaches for up to a year. Use these sprays on baseboards, in closets, in cracks and crevices, under sinks, and other places roaches live and travel.
